WhatsApp Launches Chat Translation Feature for iOS and Android Users
What’s New
WhatsApp Launches Chat Translation has officially launched a built-in message translation feature for both iPhone and Android users. From September 23, 2025, users can translate messages within individual chats, group conversations, and Channel updates simply by long-pressing on a message and selecting “Translate.” The feature supports over 19 languages on iOS at launch, and six languages on Android. Android also gains the ability to automatically translate entire chat threads.
WhatsApp Launches Chat Translation is rolling out the ability for users to translate messages into their preferred language, the Meta-owned company announced on Tuesday. Now, if users see a message in a different language, they can long-press and tap “Translate.” Users can then select the language they want to translate from or to, and download it for future use. WhatsApp notes that message translations are available in one-on-one chats, groups, and Channel updates. Android users have the option to turn on automatic translation for an entire chat thread in order to see all future incoming messages in that conversation translated.
Supported Languages & Device Differences
- Android: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic.
- iPhone (iOS): Over 19 languages including French, German, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, and more.
- Automatic translation: Only available for Android for now—entire conversations can be translated automatically.
How to Use the Translation Feature
To translate a message:
- Open WhatsApp and locate the message you want to translate.
- Long-press on the message (or tap and hold) to open the context menu.
- Select “WhatsApp Launches Chat Translation,” then pick the source and target languages.
- On Android, you can enable automatic translations for a conversation so that incoming messages are translated by default.
Privacy and On-Device Security
WhatsApp emphasizes that translations occur directly on users’ devices, keeping chats end-to-end encrypted. The company cannot read message content during translation. This design choice supports privacy concerns while enabling the new feature.
Why It Matters
With more than 3 billion users across 180+ countries, language diversity has long been a barrier for many WhatsApp users. This translation feature addresses that gap, helping users better communicate across languages without needing external translation apps. It’s a useful tool for staying connected with friends, family, and communities in multilingual settings.
